Course Details
During this 4-day workshop participants will develop the required skills and knowledge to provide information about cancer and support for people and their families, to enable informed choices about prevention and screening, diagnosis and treatment, through to survivorship or palliation.
This unit applies to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers providing a range of primary health care services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and communities.
An Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW) trained in this unit will be expected to be comfortable in supporting and talking to people about an illness that can be frightening.
They will be expected to:
- Explain how cancer develops – the lifestyle risk factors that can lead to cancer and how people can reduce the risk of cancer,
- Support clients, and their families, on their cancer ‘journey’,
- Raise palliative care as an option for clients diagnosed with cancer,
- Assist in talking through issues that may arise following treatment and to help people return to work and family life,
- Provide feedback about the effectiveness of cancer programs and services for clients, and,
- Work with health services to improve awareness about cancer prevention and early detection and lifestyle risk factors.
Only open to Aboriginal people working in the SEWB field.
