About the Role
Under general supervision of the Team Manager the primary role of the Community Engagement Officer (Tobacco) is and not limited to:
- Build the capacity of the Aboriginal community to understand the harms, risks and health impacts associated with smoking to make informed lifestyle choices.
- Provide support and facilitate access to health services, Quitline services and other treatment services available for people ready to quit smoking.
- Raise awareness, practice and demonstrate to groups, families and communities’ practical ways to change behaviours associated with smoking and to participate in healthy lifestyles.
- Maintain established networks and partnerships with relevant organisation’s and community groups to encourage a coordinated approach to tackling smoking and healthy lifestyle strategies.
- Identify, support and promote local role models who are either non-smokers or people who have quit to improve their health.
- Work within established procedures that encourage innovative ways of engaging with the Aboriginal community that support quit attempts and promote smoke-free homes and workplaces

ESSENTIAL – includes qualifications, skills, experience and knowledge
- Minimum of one (1) year vocational experience in Health/Community Services related field sufficient to fulfil duties or Certificate III or higher in Aboriginal Primary Health Care, Community Recreation, Health Promotion or Population health.
- An understanding and knowledge of social, health and cultural issues effecting the Aboriginal and Torres Islander population in Adelaide and the great metropolitan region
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people and confidence in presenting to groups.
- Ability to liaise, network and negotiate with a range of human service organisations and government agencies.
- Self-confidence and the ability to work without direct supervision, exercising tact and confidentially as required.
- Demonstrate ability to effectively engage with diverse Aboriginal audiences, including young people, pregnant mothers and those living with respiratory related chronic disease
- Ability to set priorities and monitor own workflow.
- Ability to competently use computing software.
- Knowledge of Tobacco quit/cessation programs.
- Knowledge of Healthy Lifestyle choices and strategies related to Tobacco cessation strategies.
DESIRABLE
- Knowledge and/or experience in participating in planning, marketing, facilitating and evaluating culturally appropriate community education, health promotion and social marketing activities that promote quitting, smoke-free environments and encourage attitudinal and behavioural change
- Previous experience working in community population health projects/programs that demonstrate best practice for Aboriginal and Torres Striate Islander people.
- Knowledge of Tobacco related Chronic Disease.

About the Role
The primary role of the Psychologist includes but not limited to:
- Provide clinical psychological assessment and therapeutic services to improve the psychological wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through the most appropriate framework and setting for the individual client.
- To contribute as a member of a multi-disciplinary care team to the development/and provision of recovery oriented clinical care plans for clients with identified mental health/psychological wellbeing issues.
- Encourage clients to access a range of social health and welfare services as required, which include other Nunkuwarrin Yunti programs and external agencies.
- Provide specialist, expert advice to clients and allied health professionals, primarily within Nunkuwarrin Yunti, to facilitate best practice and culturally appropriate mental health care.
- Undertake billing for services in alignment with Medicare and MBS protocols.
- Promote the service and Nunkuwarrin Yunti to peer agencies and potential referrers.
- Additional periodic or ongoing activities that may arise during the tenure of the role to meet client needs or otherwise as requested of the team manager.

- Registration as a Psychologist with Australia with the Psychology Board of Australia (AHPRA).
- Postgraduate qualifications and experience as a psychologist would be added advantage.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver a range of psychological therapies to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and adults appropriate to support their personal recovery and healing.
- Commitment to delivery of trauma informed and strengths-based practice that delivers mental health treatments within a broader understanding of social and emotional wellbeing issues.
- Ability to deliver counselling services within a primary health care environment, compliant with guidelines while meeting session and client contact targets. Ability to operate under limited direction from senior employees, and to prioritise workloads to meet deadlines, KPIs and targets.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and culture, and a demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- An understanding of how a range of issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples may impact on their emotional and social wellbeing and health, with particular reference to Stolen Generations Issues. The Psychologist must have the ability to understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kinship systems, cultural differences and be committed to a high level of service to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
- Current Registration as a Psychologist within Australia with the Psychology Board of Australia and possession of a Medicare Provider number.
- Ability to practice within appropriate APS ethical and professional practice guidelines.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary approach and contribute to the development, implementation and review of shared care plans within a recovery-oriented framework.
- Demonstrated high level of written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce reports, demonstrate conceptual thinking, and produce and deliver presentations to small and large groups.
- Highly developed organisational skills and the ability to provide innovative solutions to complex problems in sometimes adverse environments.
- Demonstrated integrity, reliability, flexibility and self-motivation.
- Ability to develop an understanding of legal issues and legislation related to the role.
- Ability to develop skills in the area of Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing.
- A knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to workplace diversity, workplace participation, Occupational Health & Safety, and willingness to abide by the policies and procedures of Nunkuwarrin Yunti of South Australia Inc.
DESIRABLE
- Endorsed area of practice: Clinical Psychology. Possession of a Medicare Provider number and eligibility to bill at the appropriate rate for Psychologists.
- Experience in working with Aboriginal people and/or communities.
- A knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to workplace diversity, workplace participation, Occupational Health & Safety, and willingness to abide by the policies and procedures of Nunkuwarrin Yunti of South Australia Inc.
- Previous experience of working collaboratively with other service providers from a range of disciplines to develop implement and evaluate holistic health services.
- Mental Health First Aid certificate or training.
- An understanding of culturally sensitive practices.
- An understanding of the legal implications of client work.
